This Coversation Again

Why do I act so frustrated all the time? Because I am frustrated. Here are multiple examples of what the most vocal feedback I’ve been getting lately sounds like:

Me: Women have a right to healthcare, including abortions.

Georgia friends not involved in politics: *silence*

Me: “Fight Nazis. They want to ethnically cleanse the world. Here is evidence including their leaders saying exactly that.”

Georgia friends not involved in politics: “well, hold on, they have a right to their own opinion. We all have freedom of speech, right?”

Georgia Conservatives: “As someone who is going to heaven and has the moral highground, I can definitely tell you that they have a right to their own opinion. We all have freedom of speech, right?” And then later, as an aside, “besides they don’t really mean it. I don’t need to watch the video of them asking crowds what would be the best way to dispose of all the blacks.”

Me: “But that’s evidence. I’m telling you. I was there. They are serious.”

GFNIIP: *silence*

GC: “But her emails!”
Later, apropos of nothing:

Georgia friends not involved in politics: “Chad, you need to make sure to listen to people who aren’t exactly like you. It’s easy to just see one perspective.”

Me: *mounting inner rage at those who say this shit but never listen to others* “so, like people of color, LGBTQ, women, other faiths, other countries, other cultures?”

Georgia Friends not involved in politics: “no. Well, yes. But I meant you need to listen to those on the other side.”

Me: “so, white straight male baby boomers and young rednecks who have internalized the image of their oppressing rich white straight male class? You think I don’t hear their voices or know their perspective?”

also Me: *stares across the table to friend who apparently can’t see / forgot about my skin color, gender, sexual preference, class, upbringing, 10 years of working in a Christian church, where I live, and that I’m currently looking at, talking to, and listening to someone who almost exactly matches the description of the type of person they’re trying to tell me to listen to*

Georgia friends not involved in politics: “Well, I guess you might. But don’t forget about their feelings.”

Me: “like the feeling that they are being persecuted because people who are not white straight males are getting equal rights?”

Georgia friends not involved in politics: *getting frustrated* *shows signs of waking up, wants to go back to sleep* “anyway, did you see that episode of the Walking Dead?” *forgets this conversation and repeats it on next visit with me*

Cheering for the pilot to fail

The pilot is drunk. The pilot is emotionally disturbed. The pilot is clearly suspicious. The pilot announces an intent to crash the plane. The pilot is a hijacker. The pilot tells everyone proudly that there is no need to pressurize the cabin, “don’t worry, we’ve ignored all mechanics that told us there are bolts loose.” The pilot is trying to fly multiple planes at once and there are much better pilots around. The pilot wants to take seat belts away from some passengers. The pilot is proud to say the first class passengers get ALL the meals during an 18 hour flight in which everyone *except* first class passengers actually paid for meals, “don’t worry, coach passengers will get what the first class passengers feel like passing down to you.” The pilot has decided it’s ok to store open containers of jet fuel in the cabin, that it will have no effect on passengers, obviously. The pilot isn’t actually a pilot but an old man who thinks he can do everything better than everyone else, no training required- it’s easy! The pilot can’t read, you know he can’t read, and you know he “learned” how to fly by watching Con Air- because he bragged about it while boarding. The pilot has a long history of crashing and suing the passengers over the loss. The pilot doesn’t “believe” in the need for landing gear- “it’s called flying, not landing, right?!” The pilot is actually just an airport Chillis-to-go manager who spent the last 8 years telling customers how much better he would do flying a plane than anyone else- most people with half a brain ignored him because obviously not, but enough people did believe, wished the current excellent pilot to fail, and then told everyone else they shouldn’t wish the pilot to fail.
Trump supporters, you accept simple explainations and outright lies without thought. If you need help with creativity, there are plenty of folks who would be glad to assist. Be honest with yourself and open up for conversation rather than tripling down on fear.
